Around 25 companies have submitted applications for MVNO license in Chile, Estrategia Online reports, citing Jorge Atton, Chile‘s undersecretary for telecommunications. Atton expects the number of MVNOs on the Chilean market to “explode” in 2013.
According to Atton, since the number portability was implemented in Chile, prepay mobile tariffs have dropped by 50 percent, while postpaid tariffs have decreased by 20 percent. Chile launched the mobile number portability system on 16 January, while fixed portability was launched in December 2011.
The reduction of mobile tariffs is also due to the entrance of new operators on the local market, Atton added. By September this year, these new operators attracted nearly 200,000 subscribers.
