Jose, many operators consider OTT messaging a threat, but in some cases also an opportunity. What does this mean for MVNOs?
Over the next four years, Mobile Squared has forecast a $182 billion revenue loss in voice and messaging due to the rise of OTT messaging. To cope with these threats, mobile operators are developing different strategies to tackle OTT. These have ranged from launching their own OTT apps such as Telefonica’s Tu Me to enabling off-net access via mobile numbers in order to gain a share of OTT traffic.
For the MVNO market, I believe that OTT presents a great opportunity. Firstly, it will enable them to provide innovative OTT-related services to end-users, to help differentiate themselves from the competition. This might include for instance providing low-cost SMS and voice services internationally or providing a multi-country SIM card. This then gives the end user, especially those who travel a lot, with several local numbers stored in one SIM card, enabling them to call and text locally whilst avoiding Roaming costs.
