Kosovo to grant MVNO licence to Telekom Srbija

Telekom-Srbija-logosource Telegeography

Kosovo’s telecoms watchdog, the Regulatory Authority for Post and Electronic Communications (ARKEP), has reportedly granted Serbian fixed line incumbent Telekom Srbija permission to launch a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in the breakaway republic, TMT Finance writes without giving its sources.

State-backed Telekom Srbija operated in Kosovo prior to the country’s separation from Serbia, and it is understood that its wireless services continue to be used illegally in the northern Serb-dominated areas of Kosovo.

Relations between Pristina and Belgrade are improving at the moment, following a deal agreed between the two countries that would grant greater autonomy to enclaves of ethnic Serbs in the northern territories of Kosovo.

Granting Telekom Srbija authorisation to offer wireless services legitimately serves the dual purpose of extending an olive branch to Belgrade, whilst bringing ongoing transactions out of the grey market and into taxable space.
