Republic Wireless dumping inventory before smartphone launch

republic-wireless-ftSource Triangle Business Venture

Republic Wireless is getting closer to solving its biggest problem. While its subscription rates may be cheap enough to disrupt the Verizons and AT&Ts of the world, its phone technology is already outdated.

Company spokesperson Cherie Gary tells me the “deep discounts” recently announced regarding its current handsets aren’t about raking in cash; they’re about clearing inventory. The new smartphones the company has hinted at in the past will be here in a matter of months.

No word on whether it’s an Android or iOS device. Gary says the company is working “very closely” with a handset manufacturer.

The testing process between Republic Wireless, its mystery partner and Sprint takes “longer than we’d like,” she says, adding that it’s still the company’s top priority.

Republic Wireless, part of Raleigh-based Bandwidth, offers phones and service that’s router-based with a Sprint backup.
