UK MVNO COMPANIES
There are over 140 UK MVNOs and sub-brands in the UK, customers of MVNOs represent nearly 16% of the total market and UK MVNO serve many different sectors, brands and markets. The UK MVNO market share is not high compared to other European countries, so there is still a tremendous Opportunity – and even though Wholesale is hugely profitable for the operators, with the possible initial inconvenience of interfacing with new wholesale providers, i.e., turning up new wholesale providers. In the last 15 years the overall UK mobile market has grown three-fold driven by pre-pay, increasing affordability. BT is making efforts to acquire EE, Hutchinson is moving to purchase O2 and both deals will be subject to competition enquiries. In 2015 the UK MNO’s were at war and MVNOs are stuck in the middle, every day they give away more free calls and SMS and increase the amount of 4G data and they give away the latest shiny smartphones just to win market share. In the last three years there has been an explosion in the number of business-to-business focused MVNOs, together with migrant and machine-to-machine MVNOs. However the retail, migrant and media MVNOs – those typically the longest established – dominate total subscriber numbers.
Virgin Mobile and Tesco Mobile have, between them, over 5 million mobile customers, with international long distance migrant MVNOs Lebara and Lycamobile over 1 million ‘active’ customers each.
