AUSTRIA MVNO COMPANIES
Austria’s mobile market has undergone considerable recent changes. 3 Austria acquired the network and assets of Orange, so consolidating the market to three network operators, while the number of MVNOs and resellers is growing steadily for a total of 25. Tele2 re-entered the mobile market in mid-2015 as an MVNO, having sold its mobile assets to Orange back in 2007. Part of this growth in the MVNO sector is due to regulatory concessions by which 3 Austria, as part of its Orange take-over, must provide 30% of network capacity to support up to 16 MVNOs. The competitive environment has led to relatively low ARPU for operators, and some of the region’s lowest tariffs for consumers. The 3G networks have seen impressive growth in subscriber uptake, largely at the expense of existing GSM offerings, while into 2015 there are the beginnings of a wide-scale migration of subscribers from 3G to LTE.
Mobile broadband has shown extraordinary growth in recent years, supported by LTE networks which by mid-2015 provided about 98% population coverage. The late-2013 auction of spectrum in several bands, raising some €2 billion, has gone far to expand mobile broadband in rural areas and improve capacity nationally.
